Indicator 16.3.2: Unsentenced detainees as a proportion of overall prison population

The total number of persons held in detention who have not yet been sentenced, as a percentage of the total number of persons held in detention.

Total prison population equals the sum of these 3 components:

(1) Provincial/territorial adults (source 1): ‘Total actual-in count’ – ‘Other statuses, actual-in count’
(2) Federal adults (source 3): ‘Actual-in count’
(3) Youth (source 2): ‘Total actual-in count’ – ‘Sentenced open custody, actual-in count’

The Unsentenced population equals the sum of these 2 components:

(1) Provincial/territorial adults (source 1): ‘Remand, actual-in count’
(2) Youth (source 2): ‘Pre-trial detention and other temporary detention, actual-in count’

Unsentenced detainees as a proportion of overall prison population = Unsentenced population/Total prison population
